Fun With Pinecones

These are just a few things that we like to do with Pinecones. So the next time you are in the Lake Tahoe area! (or any area that offers tons of pinecones) We suggest that you pick them up! Not only are they free, but you can do tons of things with these pinecones. Try some of the things I like to do.
Scented Pinecones
Mix a few drops of glue to some water (I dont use all that much, just enough to make things stick) Then brush the entire pine cone with a paint brush or a foam brush. Roll the pinecone in a mixture of cinnamon or a spice that you like, Seal the pinecone in a zip lock bag for a few hours! Then place them in a basket for a great scent to add to any room.
At times I will use a scented oil mix in a spray bottel (cinnamon is the best) then I will spray the pinecone till it is damp. After doing this, place the pinecone in a zip lock but this time I will let it sit for a day. When unlocked and placed in basket! The scent will last a few days. Len makes a perfect pine holder that works great for placing these pinecones in (click)
I have also tried placing a few pinecones in a zip lock bag, then adding a few drops of a oil scent in the bag seal it up! and let the pinecones sit over night.
The best part of these pinecones is not only does it bring fresh scents to the room you have added them in! but you can also add these pinecones to the fireplace for a great scented fire.

Pinecone Birdfeeds

Lets not forget about our fine feathered friends. As we have tons of jays in the Tahoe Area we often get great enjoyment out of watching these jays eating the pinecone birdfeeder we just made. I have found that the very large pinecones work great (as birds eat the small ones fast). Take your pinecone and place peanut butter all over the pinecone using a spatula (be sure to get the peanut butter deep inside the pinecone as well) then roll the pinecone in a plate of birdseed. Tie a string around the top of the pinecone, then tie it to a tree! Soon you will have tons and tons of birds (maybe even a squirrel or two) sitting and eating this fine treat for hours. It really brings some nice stress free time into your life.
We hope that you enjoy some of these ideas with these pinecones. However please remember to only take the pinecones that are on the ground! as picking them off the trees can harm the tree. Till then, We hope you have a great mountain day ahead of you...
